The Council of Ministers of the Kingdom has consented, on the recommendation of State Secretary Mrs. Bijleveld-Schouten, to propose Mr. G. Berkel for appointment as Lieutenant-Governor of St. Eustatius.
- Portfolio division between the Minister and State Secretary of the Interior and Kingdom Relations

Today, on february 24th 2010, the portfolio division has been decided between Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin and State Secretary Ank Bijleveld-Schouten of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. The Minister will be responsible for most parts of policy relating to security, the General Intelligence and Security Service, civil-service renewal, constitutional affairs and senior government bodies.

Minister mr. dr. E.M.H. Hirsch Ballin, Minister of Justice, also has the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations under his administration as of February 23rd, 2010. He replaces dr. G. ter Horst who, together with the other Labour members of government, has been granted resignation from the cabinet.

Minister Ter Horst and Lieutenant Governor Johnson of Saba climbed Mount Scenery - the highest point of the Kingdom – to sign an agreement for the restoration of the communications tower there for the joint control room of the emergency services.

The AIVD and its military counterpart, the MIVD, have drawn up a joint guide to make it clear what personal conduct and circumstances are taken into account during security screening procedures. The guide is available to those subject to such a procedure.
- Animal rights extremism in the Netherlands

The tactics used by animal rights extremists are often extremely intimidating for their victims, many of whom have come under attack in their personal domain. Moreover, the number of acts of violence committed by extremists has been rising. That is one of the conclusions revealed in the report Animal rights extremism in the Netherlands – fragmented but growing, which is published by the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD). The report describes the major developments in Dutch animal rights extremism since June 2007.
- Travel documents no longer issued in the event of criminal proceedings abroad

The Government has agreed to a proposal by the State Secretary Bijleveld to amend the Dutch Passport Act. The amendment will make it possible to refuse to issue a travel document or to declare a document expired if there is a risk that it will permit the holder to evade criminal proceedings or punishment in a country other than the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba.

Compulsory identification was not a noticeable problem in the 353 municipalities that participated in an experiment allowing voters to vote at a random polling station in their municipality. There is considerable support for compulsory identification among voters, with 83 percent having a positive opinion of it, as opposed to 6 percent who are against it.
- 10-10-10: End of the Netherlands Antilles

On the10th of October 2010 the Netherlands Antilles will cease to exist. Curaçao and Sint Maarten will, subject to conditions, become independent countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius will become ‘special municipalities’ of the Netherlands.
